The running order.
Two sides · Sequenced on purpose
Anyone can make a list. Sequencing is a different skill, and it is the same one as ordering a deck, a film or an argument: decide what the first thing has to do, what the last thing has to leave behind, and how you get somebody from one to the other without them noticing the work.
For starting something
Front-loaded, no ballads, and the two most demanding tracks sit at three and four while attention is still cheap.
- 01 The opener It has one job, which is to make the next eight minutes feel inevitable.
- 02 The lift Immediately faster, before anyone has decided what kind of record this is.
- 03 The weight The hardest thing here, placed where it can still be heard properly.
- 04 The turn Same tempo, different mood, so the drop in energy arrives as a choice.
- 05 The exit Ends unresolved, because side A should feel like half of something.
For finishing something
Slower, longer tracks, and the best one is at four rather than one, because by then you have earned it.
- 01 The reset Quiet, almost nothing, to clear whatever side A left in the room.
- 02 The long one Six minutes with no chorus. It is the reason anybody plays this side.
- 03 The lull Deliberately unremarkable. A record with no dull patch has no shape.
- 04 The best one Placed fourth on purpose. First would have wasted it.
- 05 The door Resolves, then stops, and does not fade. Fades are for people who could not decide.
Both sides are in the crate below. The order is the only thing I actually made.
Why these.
Somebody else's work
Everything on this page is made by somebody else. It is here because it is what plays while the rest of this site gets built, and because a person is partly the things they keep going back to.
