De La Paz · About

About.

A systems-oriented builder. Bespoke Business Development is my advisory practice, the products are my laboratory, and the books, films and art are the same practice carried out in other materials.

The background.

§ 01 · Background
Who, and how it fits together
Portrait of Lewis Byron De La Paz

I am Lewis Byron De La Paz. I build businesses from the system and UX outward: the strategy, the operations, the software and the brand, designed, built and run as one thing. My background is in architecture, engineering and art, and it shows up in all of it.

Bespoke Business Development is my advisory practice, where that method becomes a client service. LastAwarded, miya.life, Mnememory, Futurisca, Counterfirm, Kinnomy, Gracekeeps, KindSplit, Kept Plans and the Neural Sector Intelligence are my laboratory: products I designed, engineered, launched and run, so the advice comes from something I have had to do myself. Operations management and artificial intelligence sit at the center of the work.

I am finishing a degree in Organizational Management, I have published three books, and I write, direct and cut my own films. I like to make things. Whatever needs making.

The practice.

§ 02 · Practice
Six that carry it · Six more materials

Six disciplines carry the practice, and operations management and artificial intelligence are the two I am training in most deliberately. The other six are the same practice in other materials. The full index runs past a hundred entries and has a page of its own.

01. Discipline

Operations Management

The load-bearing discipline. Systems, cadences, evidence. What lets one person run a consulting practice, a software product, and a shelf of books without dropping any of them.

02. Discipline

Artificial Intelligence

Native to everything I ship: a personal OS with an assistant built in, a research engine inside a CRM, a consulting practice run with a twelve-agent AI workforce. A material, not a magic word.

03. Discipline

Creative Direction

Sets the stance. Chooses what is worth defending. Argues through form. Every brand I have built, from a consulting firm to an espresso label, started here.

04. Discipline

Design

Every surface, from a wordmark to a legal ledger. Brand systems, typography, interfaces, decks, and ad creative by the hundred. Craft as an ethical position.

05. Discipline

Software Engineering

Systems that stay coherent as they grow. A personal operating system, a client portal, a command center, a dozen internal tools, all shipped nightly for months at a time.

Systems & Economics

Pricing, unit economics, incentives, cadence. The economist's habit of asking what a thing really costs, and who pays for it.

The same practice, in other materials
  • Art & ImageA background in art that never left. Composition, image, and the visual language under every product, including two lookbook campaigns of more than six hundred pieces.
  • Film & DirectionSequence, cast, framing. Short films and product films, from script to cut. The order the viewer encounters things is what decides the meaning.
  • Architecture & SpaceHow a product feels to walk through. How a room decides what it wants to be. A background in architecture that shows up in every interface.
  • Writing & PublishingThree self-published books and counting. The essay is the smallest complete unit of a practice. A book of them is the largest.
  • Humanitarian WorkBuilding for the people who are not in the room. Access, honesty, and dignity as design constraints, not afterthoughts.
  • Making & MaterialsCoffee, code, cabinetry, cloth. Everything is a material once the maker touches it.

The philosophy.

§ 03 · Philosophy
Nine principles

What I defend. Each principle was earned by shipping something under it, and then keeping it.

I

Operations is the craft.

The best products are legible operating systems. If a thing cannot be run cleanly by one person, it was not designed enough.

II

Artificial intelligence is a material, not a strategy.

It is a substrate I shape, alongside code and copy and cabinetry. It gets a chair at the table, not the head of it.

III

Design is not a finish.

It is the argument the work makes without speaking. It arrives at the first sketch, not the last polish.

IV

Everything is architecture.

A product, a film, a room, a company. Every one is a building, and every building is a system. The disciplines are one discipline in different materials.

V

Ship every night.

The work grows by evidence, not intention. What shipped this week is the honest measure of a practice.

VI

Refuse the plural.

Bespoke over standard. Always. A curated engagement earns more than a productized one, for both sides.

VII

Time is not sold.

It is compounded into a body of work. I take advisory work selectively, so the making stays the point.

VIII

Money is a substrate.

It carries the work. It does not steer it. Economics is a design material, never the design.

IX

Nothing is precious.

Every piece becomes the next piece's foundation. The archive keeps going. Nothing is the last word.

Outside the work.

§ 04 · Outside
The personal layer

The rest of the person. None of it is on the way to hiring me, and all of it is in the work somewhere.

The bearing.

§ 05 · Bearing
Twenty-four headings · Scrub the tape

A compass card, unrolled flat. Drag the tape, tap the arrows, or throw it and let it settle. Whatever lands under the crosshair is the heading in hand, along with where it sits between making a thing and running one.

What it leaves behind
Where this one lives

The machine.

§ 06 · Machine
Six gears, one drive

Every one of these disciplines is geared to the others. Turn one and the whole train turns, at its own ratio, in its own direction. Scrolling drives it. So does dragging it.

Driving — 0 rpm
  • Operations managementThe drive gear. Thirty teeth, slowest, decides the pace of all the others.
  • Artificial intelligenceEighteen teeth. Turns faster than the drive, in the other direction.
  • Creative directionTwenty-four teeth. The one that decides what the machine is for.
  • Software engineeringFourteen teeth. The fastest in the train and the loudest under load.
  • DesignTwenty-one teeth. Meshes with everything on either side of it.
  • Writing & publishingTwelve teeth, belted to the flywheel that keeps the whole thing turning between jobs.

Scroll drives the train. Drag it and it keeps spinning until the friction takes it back. Every gear is a discipline; click one to go to it.
