Every strong opinion I have held for a long time was, at some point, a thing I said out loud before I had earned it. That is not a defence of speaking carelessly. It is an observation that the only reliable way I have ever found to discover that I am wrong is to be wrong somewhere a person can hear me, and then to watch what happens to my argument when it meets somebody who has actually done the thing.
The alternative, which is to hold the opinion privately until it is perfect, does not produce a better opinion. It produces an older one.
